The consumer watchdog is considering drastically scaling back its regular updates on the most significant scams impacting Australia after data difficulties delayed its latest report by three months.
Additional data sources, duplicate scam reports and confusion about whether an incident should be recorded when it occurs or when it is reported have been blamed for the latest delay.
The slowdown and potential shift to yearly instead of quarterly reports comes as both the regulator and government move into the next phase of a crackdown on scams.
