The Albanese government is facing growing calls to make good on its commitment to set up an AI Safety Institute, with Australia the only signatory of an almost year-old declaration yet to follow through.
In an open letter published ahead of the federal Budget on Tuesday, a group of AI safety experts urged the government to take action, warning that not doing so sets a “dangerous precedent”.
The group, dubbed Australians for AI Safety, also wants an Australian AI Act that would put up mandatory guardrails on high-risk AI system, as has already been proposed by the government but which is yet to be finalised.
