The federal government’s cyber hubs program was scrapped after an independent evaluation found the model would not have resulted in a significant cybersecurity uplift or prevented an Optus-style data breach.
The report also found that the program, piloted at a cost of $80 million, would have required at least $500 million to formally establish within the four chosen government agencies over two years.
Cancellation of the program in favour of a “lower cost approach” consisting of other targeted cyber uplift and hardening activities was subsequently adopted.
