Targeted support for innovation and greater international engagement will be needed to ensure Australia realises its critical minerals processing ambitions, according to national science agency CSIRO.
In a new report, CSIRO argues “focussed” research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) can deliver improvements to enable competitive exports, while securing domestic supply chains and contributing to a low carbon future.
CSIRO says the report, to be released on Wednesday, is the “first comprehensive assessment of innovation” needed to scale value-added processing for lithium, cobalt, graphite, rare earths, and silicon, as well as lithium-ion battery recycling.
