CSIRO argues the case for local AI foundation models

Researchers at Australia’s national science agency are “bullish” on the potential productivity gains to be had from developing foundation AI models in Australia, and say that building sovereign capability should be seriously considered.

The comments were made by CSIRO principal scientist in strategy and foresight Dr Stefan Hajkowicz, co-author of a new report urging Australian governments to consider the need to build computational power, make data sets more accessible, and improve training skilled workers, although it does not include specific policy recommendations.

To be released on Thursday, the report highlights that the “vast bulk of AI foundation models are made and operated by overseas technology corporations”, raising concerns regarding competition, reliability and stability, and confidentiality, privacy and security of information.
