Conroy talks up ‘huge opportunity’ of export control reforms

Defence Industry minister Pat Conroy has dismissed concerns surrounding proposed reforms to the Defence Control Act, describing the changes as “a huge opportunity for Australian Industry”.

The proposed Defence Trade Controls Export Bill 2023 intends to support the creation of a export license free Defence industrial base between Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom to enable collaboration under the AUKUS nuclear-submarine deal and critical technology collaboration arrangements.

But the bill will criminalise working with or exporting to foreign persons any defence or dual-use technologies listed in the Defence and Strategic Goods List without a licence or other permission. This list includes quantum tech, space tech, and various electronic components.
