Cheesecake bridges: Why govt tech funding needs a rethink

Around one in every 10 dollars spent by the Commonwealth goes to technology. The massive commitment is justified, senior bureaucrats overseeing projects like digital identity say, but how the funding rolls out needs to change.

Digital Transformation Agency chief executive Chris Fechner on Tuesday said the roughly 10 per cent share had remained relatively steady for most of the last decade and is needed to deliver services in various forms to a diverse population.

But he warned a longstanding “cheesecake” approach to digital investments is creating a tech debt that ultimately hold services back.
