Canada drops $2.7bn on sovereign AI capability programs

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has unveiled C$2.4 billion (A$2.7 billion) in budget initiatives aimed at boosting national capability in artificial intelligence, including large investments if Canadian-owned and located AI infrastructure.

While Canada’s investment in AI is dwarfed by the commercial AI research and infrastructure investments of the Big Tech companies, or the national investments by the US, China or the European Union, the scale and sovereign focus of the AI budget measure is instructive.

The size and composition of the Australian and Canadian economies are not massively different. The two countries have comparable political institutions and similar geographic and social issues.
