BoM IT overhaul ‘within budget’ despite cost blowouts on contracts

A complete rebuild of Bureau of Meteorology IT systems initiated in response to a 2015 hack by suspected foreign adversaries is “well within” budget despite several related contracts almost doubling in value, Senate Estimates has heard.

In August, the long-running upgrade known as ROBUST was reported to be off track, with national weather agency purportedly forced to tap into a $200 million-plus sustainability fund to pay for blowouts, including on several contracts with consultants.

Delays with the program – the cost of which has never been publicly disclosed for national security reasons – were also reported to be threatening the rollout of the bureau’s new supercomputer, Australis II.
