Big Tech concerns with proposed misinformation and disinformation laws that will grant new powers to the Australian Communications and Media Authority are “very valid”, according to the regulator’s chair Nerida O’Loughlin.
But the regulator and the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts have rejected claims that the scheme amounts to government censorship.
The federal government is currently consulting on the reforms that will build on existing voluntary codes by imposing more stringent requirements on digital platforms like Meta’s Facebook, Twitter and TikTok to remove misinformation that causes serious harm.
