A bottom-up approach to AI ethics should be adopted across the Australian government, according to an expert adviser to the Biden Administration, who says public servants must be empowered at an agency-level.
Reggie Townsend, the vice president of data ethics at analytics software firm SAS and a National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee member, said that doing so would allow the government to better respond in a fast changing and ever transforming technology landscape.
“Right now, the conventional thinking is to have expertise distributed throughout government as opposed to centralised within government because it becomes too cumbersome on one agency,” he said.
