Australia sets green hydrogen targets, secures German backing

The federal government has set ambitious production and export targets for green hydrogen to drive the delivery of a $225 billion project pipeline mostly stuck at the feasibility and engineering stage.

Climate Change and Energy minister Chris Bowen launched the National Hydrogen Strategy on Friday, committing to co-fund a $660 million German procurement opportunity for Australian-made green hydrogen in the process.

The government wants at least 15 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen to be produced locally each year by 2050, more than 30 times more than the amount of hydrogen currently used by industry in Australia.
