The European Union’s target to meet a large proportion of its critical minerals processing needs domestically can coexist with Australia’s sovereign capability ambitions, according to the bloc’s energy commissioner Kadri Simson.
Europe’s recently adopted Critical Raw Materials Act includes a 2030 target to meet 40 per cent of its processing needs from within the jurisdiction, a move that the head of the cooperative research centre now behind the Powering Australia Industry Growth Centre has previously described as “not positive”.
Following her speech at the National Press Club on Monday, Ms Simson said there will be mutually beneficially opportunities for both the Australian and Europe in the critical minerals processing sectors due to increasingly high demand and the EU’s desire to diversify its supply chain.
