Large investments into local industry via the Albanese government’s newly interventionist approach to industry policy have not raised competition concerns, says the Assistant Minister for Treasury Andrew Leigh, who highlighted the importance of boosting Australia’s economic complexity.
Speaking at the National Press Club on Tuesday, Dr Leigh also discussed the need for a rigorous approach to evaluating the effectiveness of government policy initiatives. The government is setting up an Australian Centre for Evaluation, which will primarily seek to undertake randomised controlled trials of government programs.
