A Senate committee has given the green light to landmark changes to the Australian Research Council, including scrapping ministers’ veto power, but the latest debate has again exposed “abysmally low” funding levels.

The bill came in response to a review of the ARC last year that recommended sweeping changes to address the administration and political interference issues that have plagued the ARC for more than a decade.
