ARC Linkage grants limited impact for smaller firms

The Australian Research Council’s $300 million Linkage program increased revenues for the large companies that received funding support, but had only a limited effect on SMEs involved in the program, a new study has found.

Researchers at Swinburne University and the University of Melbourne evaluated the Australian Research Council’s (ARC) Linkage grants program – a long-running research and development program that requires university-industry collaboration – in a working paper on ‘the effects of university-industry collaboration subsidies on firm performance’.

The paper, published in December 2023, found that large businesses experience up to a 20.8 per cent increase in turnover from engaging in university-industry through the Linkage program.
