A six-month trial of Microsoft Copilot saved some federal public servants up to an hour each day when searching for, summarising information and drafting documents, an evaluation has found.
But only a third of the public servants taking part in the trial used the tool daily due to “adoption challenges”, highlighting the limitations of large-scale deployments of generative artificial intelligence.
Concern over the wider impact of generative AI on jobs and skills in Australian Public Service was also expressed by participants, as was the risk of vendor lock-in and the environmental impact of using the tool on a day-to-day basis.
