AI researchers struggle to find domestic postgrads

Universities are struggling to find technical AI and data science experts to fill scholarships reserved for domestic students, putting their CSIRO funding commitments at risk of being rescinded.

The multimillion-dollar Next Generation Graduates Program (NGGP) funds 500 honours and postgraduate positions for domestic students to drive research translation in AI, quantum and other emerging technologies.

But researchers have told InnovationAus.com they struggle to find suitable scholarship candidates with technical backgrounds in AI-related fields due to the higher salaries being offered in the private sector luring the best students away from further study.
