After feds backtrack, Victoria stumps up $35m for cyber hubs

Victoria will spend millions establishing a central Cyber Defence Centre that will eventually serve a series of state government cyber hubs, at a time when the Commonwealth is walking back plans for a similar model.

The 2023 Victorian Budget, unveiled by Treasurer Tim Pallas on Tuesday afternoon, contains $34.7 million for a cyber security reform package, with all but $1.6 million of the funding to be provided over the next year.

According to Budget documents, the funding will be used to “review and strengthen the cyber defence systems across the Victorian public sector, and uplift response capabilities for cyber incidents with the creation of a new Cyber Defence Centre”.
