A Future Made in Australia needs a research reset

The Albanese government’s flagship industry policy is at risk of being undermined by plummeting investment in research and development, Australia’s universities and research groups are warning ahead of Tuesday’s Budget.

Groups representing the engine room of Australian innovation through hundreds of thousands of individual scientists and researchers and dozens of research-heavy universities have renewed calls for a return globally competitive R&D funding levels.

The groups’ push for more R&D funding comes as a key current source in international students looks set to drop and as the government considers expert recommendations to review the national research funding system.
