Australians are the most pessimistic people in the world when it comes to artificial intelligence, according to a global study that will raise more questions about the federal government’s approach.

The study by KPMG and the University of Melbourne Business School is one of the most comprehensive on AI attitudes since the rise of ChatGPT in 2022, surveying 48,000 people across 47 countries.

It shows that global uptake has been extraordinarily fast – two in three people are now intentionally using AI – but trust is going backwards amid low AI literacy and insufficient regulation.
