Cooperative Research Centres are seeking an expanded role that would allow them to access government funding beyond the Industry department and help deliver flagship programs like the National Reconstruction Fund.

The changes would be some of the most significant ever to the CRC scheme, which has operated since the Hawke government and aims to solve industry challenges through medium- and long-term research collaborations.
