Govt urged to act on automated decision-making reform

As Attorney General Mark Dreyfus forges ahead with a framework for automating government decisions, experts say the plan is missing foundational work and the reform ambition it needs.

In response to the Robodebt royal commission, the Albanese government agreed in 2023 to consider a consistent legal framework in which automation in government services can operate.

It accepted the new framework must greatly improve transparency on the use of automation technologies and offer clear review paths for a growing use of automated decision making (ADM) across government.
