‘Kind of useless’: CSIRO on Microsoft AI and the ‘productivity paradox’

A CSIRO trial of Microsoft’s artificial intelligence tool revealed it can save time by automating low level activities, but its difficulties in more complex tasks and missing domain knowledge led to a “productivity paradox” that has complicated a decision about wider deployment.

Gains in summarising meetings, email drafting and information retrieval were often offset by a need for “extensive verification and correction” of AI-generated outputs from Microsoft 365 Copilot, which also raised ethical concerns among users.

The findings, which show mixed satisfaction and productivity results, as well as a gap in expectations and outcomes, are in new reports by the CSIRO.
