Australia’s tech sector has reacted with disappointment to Treasurer Jim Chalmers’ fourth Budget, saying with the absence of significant new investment in artificial intelligence and the digital economy, the nation’s prospects are diminished.
With other advanced economies ramping up spending on AI, industry groups on Wednesday were in broad agreement that the pre-election plan for Australia’s economy represented another “missed opportunity” for action.
But some of the most strident criticism came from one of Australia’s most well known data centre leaders, NextDC chief executive Craig Scroggie, who said the Budget showed “no clear ambition” on AI, the “single greatest transformation in technology history”.
