Australia’s privacy regulator scored a $14 million boost in Tuesday’s Budget as it attempts to reduce a backlog of cases while also overseeing the government’s fledgling Digital ID system and document verification scheme.
The Office of the Australia Information Commissioner (OAIC) has been asked to reduce its staff numbers again, however, having already endured a major restructure and job losses this financial year.
The restructure was driven in part by a need to become a leaner and more forceful regulator after regulated entities flouted Australia’s privacy principles with invasive technology like data harvesting and facial recognition.
