The federal government has hit pause on plans to regulate AI through the imposition of mandatory guardrails, upended by a fast moving and freewheeling Trump administration that is headed in the opposite direction.
Industry and Science minister Ed Husic has been working on building regulatory frameworks for artificial intelligence since the middle of 2023.
In January of this year, Mr Husic said that government was in “the final stages” of its policy development work but has been silent on the issue since then. The mantra at the time was that Australia would “harmonise where we can, localise where we have to”.
