Defence explores Musk’s Starshield for future satcom needs

Defence is exploring the possibility of using SpaceX’s Starshield for military-grade satellite communications after axing its first run at a “sovereign-controlled” constellation project last year.

Military officials last week confirmed that discussions into using low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites purpose-built for the United States as an alternative to geo-stationary satellites are underway, as the force looks to revive JP9102.

The project with Lockheed Martin was abandoned in November last year — 18 months after the US defence and aerospace manufacturer was selected as the preferred prime contractor — in favour of a LEOSat-based approach.
