R&D review urged to tackle tax, coordinate innovation

Research institutions and industry groups are lining up to assist a landmark review of the national R&D system, but are also urging the government not to delay immediate action as Australia slides behind other nations.

The research sector wants the review to drive better coordination across more than a dozen government portfolios involved in R&D, while industry is pushing for tax reforms that stop firms going offshore and breaking the innovation loop.

All the moves are on the table in a 12-month review — the first of its kind in almost 20 years — being led by tech sector veteran Robyn Denholm, who has big ambitions and a wide remit.
