‘Frontrunning’ fears over NRF’s first $40m deal

A media drop and alleged leak has put the corporation in charge of the government’s $15 billion manufacturing fund under scrutiny at its first Senate Estimates appearance since its inaugural deal.

Officials from the National Reconstruction Fund Corporation (NRFC) on Monday distanced their staff from a newspaper report ahead of the official announcement that funds had been released and “deep tech” companies would be among the first recipients.

The Sydney Morning Herald’s story cited an unnamed government source for the deep tech claim, which was made days before the NRFC announced it was backing a Toowoomba mining manufacturer Russell Mineral Equipment.
