Dept fumbled messaging as jobseeker glitch slows reporting

The Employment department has conceded its automated messages telling jobseekers to work around a government tech issue or risk losing their payments was wrong and has updated the message.

But officials are still unable to explain the underlying cause of the issue, which was identified a month ago and is potentially affecting thousands of jobseekers subject to mutual obligations.

The issue — a slowdown in processing reporting of job searches to Workforce Australia through an automated mailbox — was first reported by InnovationAus.com on Wednesday, with advocates warning of more burden being shifted onto vulnerable people.
