$562m aged care tech overhaul off course from the start

The federal government’s overhaul of aged care technology was poorly planned and beset by delays as consultants and foreign software vendors were handed more than half a billion dollars.

Internal documents obtained by InnovationAus.com reveal for the first time how much the work to upgrade government platforms used to interface with aged care providers has struggled under tight timelines.

Since the heavily outsourced work to rebuild the backend systems began in 2022 as part of the government’s response to a damning royal commission, key early milestones were missed as a rift grew between business and technology teams under inexperienced leadership.
