Southern Launch sets late-2025 for first Whalers Way rocket

Southern Launch has cleared a key regulatory hurdle on the way launching its first rocket from the Whalers Way Orbital Complex in late 2025, with construction at the site set to start soon now that it has been final development approval.

Planning minister Nick Champion’s approval decision was published on Thursday, more than five years after the launch complex was declared a’ major project’ in August 2019.

The SA government development approval arrived two days after federal Environment minister Tanya Plibersek’s approval of the project, much to the dismay of conservation groups that have claimed the site is too close to the habitats of endangered species.
