Adelaide space company Fleet Space Technologies has won the Energy and Renewables Award at the InnovationAus 2024 Awards for Excellence for its mining exploration technology which allows for the discovery of critical minerals with little environmental impact.

The InnovationAus 2024 Awards for Excellence were presented at a black-tie gala dinner at The Venue Alexandria in Sydney on Wednesday night.

Fleet Space Technologies won the award for its Exosphere technology, an end-to-end solution allowing for the discovery of critical minerals with satellites and space technologies, edge computing and artificial intelligence.

The Energy and Renewables Award was sponsored by the federal Department of Industry, Science and Resources. The award was presented on the night by National AI Centre Strategic Engagement Manager Rita Arrigo.

Fleet Space Technologies is a pioneer in space technologies, multiphysics, data acquisition, edge computing and AI.

One of its offerings is ExoSphere, which uses its expertise to provide critical minerals exploration in some of the harshest environments in the world, from Australia’s red lands to Canada’s permafrost.

Using ExoSphere, clients can conduct 3D subsurface mapping up to 2.5km in depth to search for critical minerals, with nearly no environmental impact, providing a more sustainable and scalable way of discovering the minerals needed to power the push towards net zero carbon emissions.

The service utilises a constellation of satellites, smart seismic sensors and a world-first multimodal AI foundation model for minerals discovery.

The smart seismic sensors, dubbed Geodes, are built with technology that is capable of listening to the natural seismic activity of the Earth’s subsurface, with zero environmental impact.

The data collected by the tools is then sent to the company’s satellites in real-time, converted into a 3D subsurface visualisation and then delivered back to its clients.

Fleet Space Technologies’ ExoSphere has been used by 40 leading exploration companies, including Rio Tinto, Core Lithium and Barrick Gold, and has been used to conduct more than 400 surveys across five continents.

The other finalists for the Energy and Renewables Award were Innofocus, ClearVue Technologies and Green Gravity.

The InnovationAus 2024 Awards for Excellence are supported by the Australian Computer Society, Investment NSW, Department of Industry, Science and Resources, Technology Council of Australia, TechnologyOne, National Artificial Intelligence Centre, CSIRO’s ON Innovation Program, Reason Group, Q-CTRL, University of New South Wales, South by South-West Sydney and IP Australia.
