‘Big business’: Australia’s chip opportunity lies in design

Australia has a huge opportunity to build a thriving semiconductor industry without spending big on a state-of-the-art chip fab for onshore manufacturing, thanks to its world-class R&D talent pool.

That’s according to leading VCs and analysts, who say the time is right for the country to tap into growing demand for smaller, more powerful chips and grow the nascent local industry into “big business”.

But with the federal and Queensland governments investing almost $1 billion to bring Californian-based startup PsiQuantum to Brisbane, others believe there is still a place for domestic manufacturing.

“…massive manufacturing onshore…”, what a 19th century concept… as if a trusted international partner like Australia doesn’t have total access to these ecosystems in a 21st century globalised economy.
