South Australian public sector stalwart Josh Wheeler has been appointed the chief executive of Green Industries SA as the circular economy agency prepares to release a new strategic plan.
Mr Wheeler has been acting in the role since his predecessor and CSIRO alumnus Professor Ian Overton left the role in March.
Prior to joining Green Industries SA more than eight years ago, Mr Wheeler spent four years at the state’s environment and protection authority.
Green Industries SA presiding member Nikki Govan said Mr Wheeler’s appointment comes at an “important time” for the agency, which is developing a circular economy strategy for 2025-2030.
Deputy Premier Susan Close said Mr Wheeler has “the skills, experience and passion necessary to lead the dynamic and high-performing agency Green Industries SA”.
The Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering has named 32 new fellows for 2024. AI experts Professor Toby Walsh, Professor Karin Verspoor and Professor Clinton Fookes are among the fellows.
Other new ATSE fellows for 2024 include co-founder of OneVentures Anne-Marie Birkill and CSIRO chief research scientist Dr Josep Canadell. A full list of new ATSE fellows can be found here.
As previously reported, Professor Emma Johnston has left the University of Sydney to become the University of Melbourne’s first female vice-chancellor.
Professor Andrea Morello, the deputy director of the Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation & Communication Technology at the University of New South Wales, has joined the scientific advisory team of San Francisco-based firm Conductor Quantum.
Queensland Department of Resources deputy director-general for georesources, Shaun Ferris, will join the Queensland Office of the Coordinator-General as assistant coordinator-general for industry and infrastructure next week.
The state government has also appointed Aaron Johnstone as the Queensland Renewable Energy Jobs Advocate. Mr Johnstone was formerly state director of the Queensland branch of industry body Cement Concrete and Aggregates Australia.
Meanwhile, the state’s deputy director general of energy at the Department of Energy and Public Works David Shankey has stepped down after more than three years.
Equatorial Launch Australia has appointed Francois Lambert as its new head of regulatory affairs. He has previously worked at Amazon as corporate counsel for satellites on Project Kuiper, the multinational’s low Earth orbit satellite constellation.
At the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Peter Good has been promoted to assistant secretary for the industry, innovation, science, and communications branch.
The CSIRO new chief information security officer Jamie Rossato began last month. Mr Rossato has previously worked at food and beverage manufacturer Lion as chief information security officer and at Orica as vice president of IT.
The Department of Health and Aged Care’s new assistant secretary for the cyber security branch is David Lang, moving from Services Australia where he was national manager for cyber operations. He fills the vacancy created by Monique Morgan’s role change to assistant secretary for corporate systems.
The Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre has appointed Matthew Cronin as its state director in Western Australia. Mr Cronin was previously commercial director at the state-owned Water Corporation with former roles at ATCO Australia and state-owned grid operator Western Power.
Amanda Heyworth has joined the National Archives of Australia Advisory Council on a three-year term. Ms Heyworth is a prolific board director and has been chair of UniSA ventures since 2020 with nearly 13 years spent on its board.
The new chief executive of Western Australian state-owned chemical and forensic science lab ChemCentre Paul Nicholls begins his five-year term on October 12. He formerly was director for research partnerships at the University of Queensland and before that at Curtin University.
The Hunter Medical Research Institute has appointed Brian Jones as chief operating officer and Todd Williams as chief growth officer. Mr Jones was formerly the University of Newcastle’s executive director of change and improvement while Mr Williams has been appointed internally.
The Curtin University-led Resources Technology and Critical Minerals Trailblazer has appointed Resource Capital Funds managing director Brett Beatty to its board.
