Defence outlines plan for university-based research centres

Defence will stand up new research centres inside Australian universities to fast-track the development of cutting-edge technologies that hold promise for asymmetric advantage in a changing geostrategic environment.

Each Defence Research Centre (DRC) will tackle missions that help deliver next-generation capabilities for the country’s warfighters, bringing academics and industry together to work on classified research.

The mission-driven centres will also serve to protect research from the growing risk of espionage and foreign interference, with safeguards for data, systems and intellectual property.
