Digital rights and industry groups say new privacy legislation falls short on protecting people and boosting competition, as the latest attempt to modernise Australia’s privacy laws approaches its fifth year of deliberation.
In its first tranche of changes revealed Thursday, the government is not addressing big ticket reforms it agreed to last year like ending an exemption from privacy laws for small businesses or creating European style right to erasure and clear consent requirements.
Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus on Thursday stressed the new bill is an “important first step…but it will not be the last”, but the bigger reforms are now not expected before the 2025 election.
