Budget crunch sinks NSW digital voting revival

The NSW Electoral Commission will be forced to “pare back” its systems and delay the reintroduction of digital voting after three funding proposals were knocked back by the state government.

A digital voting system to replace iVote, which was abandoned after technical glitches in 2021 local government elections, had been expected to arrive for blind and low vision voters in time for the 2027 state election.

After a wider expansion to other voters was ruled out in a review last year, the new system was to end what advocates have described as “equity and inclusion vacuum” since the removal of iVote.
