Debate on deepfake imagery bill kicks off in Canberra

Industry experts and law enforcement agencies have largely backed federal reforms to clarify the illegality of distributing deepfake imagery, but some have sought amendments to broaden the bill and provide a multifaceted response.

The ‘Deepfake Sexual Material’ bill will introduce offences for the transmission of sexual material related to adults, providing certainty to the current patchwork of state laws and a clearer path to criminal proceedings.

Despite its name, the reforms also capture unaltered material that is shared without consent, with the tech sector and AI experts backing the reforms as an example of the harms-based, non-prescriptive approach that is needed.
