Apple pinged by EU competition laws Australia wants to mimic

Apple is in breach of new European competition laws, regulators alleged this week, setting up the first test of the Big Tech ‘gatekeeper’ regime that Australia’s competition watchdog wants to mimic.

The tech giant is accused of breaching the Digital Markets Act (DMA) by not allowing developers to freely steer consumers to offers and content beyond Apple’s platform. It also faces a new probe into the fees it charges third-party app developers and app stores.

The alleged breach of the DMA – which can lead to fines of up to 20 per cent of the tech giant’s global turnover and forced break ups – comes despite Apple making significant changes to its business practices in anticipation of the European laws.
