Amazon has been granted regulatory approval to operate its forthcoming internet satellite service Project Kuiper in Australia, as the company sets its sights on customer trials of the Starlink rival as soon as the end of this year.
The Australian Communications and Media Authority last week signed off on the carrier licence for Amazon Kuiper Australia to operate its low earth orbit (LEO) internet satellite system, which is not yet operational.
Project Kuiper promises to help close the digital divide by delivering internet connectivity to as many as 500 million households globally through a constellation of 3,236 LEO satellites that will orbit 500km above the Earth’s surface.
