Tech sector pushes for dual-use carve out in Defence export controls

The tech sector says it is making progress on upcoming Defence trade controls so dual-use technology development isn’t captured by the toughest rules, as the research sector unites on an exemption for its fundamental work.

Controversial new Defence trade controls have been rushed into Parliament to satisfy AUKUS commitments. The new regime will impose new criminal penalties for sharing military or dual-use technologies with non-exempt foreign individuals or entities.

The approach has been criticised by parts of the technology industry and research sector for curtailing international collaboration and restricting scientific work.
