New sovereignty group demands $1bn annually for local defence industry

A group of Australian defence primes is demanding the government lessen its reliance on foreign suppliers by supporting genuinely Australian companies, including ring fencing a new $1 billion budget for them.

The Sovereign Australian Prime Alliance (SAPA) — an informal group of Australian munitions, ship building, space and tech companies — also wants a shakeup of procurement rules, a new industry council to advise government, explicit commitments to Australian primes, and for meaningful progress on AUKUS Pillar II.

The group of Australian contracting primes, which together win billions in Defence contracts, warned current defence industry policy has helped create a dangerous over reliance on the US industry and international defence primes.
