New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has expanded the state’s digital service delivery agenda with the establishment of a Cyber Security NSW office that will be responsible for coordinating cyber security decision-making across the state government.
The office will sit within the recently established Department of Customer Service under Victor Dominello.
Cyber Security NSW will be led by Tony Chapman, who has been named as the chief cyber security officer.
The new role replaces what was formerly known as the NSW government chief information security officer, which was held by Maria Milosavljevic until she left in January for a position with the Commonwealth’s Department of Human Services.
Mr Chapman had previously been the director of cyber security engagement and prevention and held a similar role at the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission.
Despite the new name, Mr Chapman’s responsibilities remain the same, including working with other NSW government departments, other states and territories, and the federal government on cyber security best practice.
NSW Chief Information and Digital Officer Greg Wells said the functions of the Cyber Security NSW and Mr Chapman’s appointment was indicative of the state government’s focus on digital transformation and improving customer service outcomes.
“A key component of the role will be driving a culture of risk management and awareness to support greater resilience to cyber security threats,” Mr Wells said.
“Tony and his team will build on the digital transformation work occurring across the NSW Government, ensuring our digital spaces are safeguarded against cyber threats,” he said.
“Cyber Security NSW will continue its critical work enhancing whole-of-government cyber security capabilities and standards on behalf of NSW.
“It will also work more closely with the Information and Privacy Commission on security, privacy and the availability of systems and services during the state’s digital transformation,” Mr Wells said.
