Aust industrial policy not currently a hazard to competition: Leigh

Large investments into local industry via the Albanese government’s newly interventionist approach to industry policy have not raised competition concerns, says the Assistant Minister for Treasury Andrew Leigh, who highlighted the importance of boosting Australia’s economic complexity.

Speaking at the National Press Club on Tuesday, Dr Leigh also discussed the need for a rigorous approach to evaluating the effectiveness of government policy initiatives. The government is setting up an Australian Centre for Evaluation, which will primarily seek to undertake randomised controlled trials of government programs.

Over the next decade, the Albanese government will invest at least $15 billion in local manufacturing through the National Reconstruction Fund and $2 billion in two to three green hydrogen production facilities through the Hydrogen Headstart Program.
