Australia’s new Chief Radiation Health Scientist is Dr Rick Tinker who is being promoted from his role as the Director of the Assessment and Advice section of the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA). This promotion was made to replace Dr Gillian Hirth who took the ARPANSA chief executive role in March this year.

Dr Tinker will also serve as the Head of the Radiation Health Services Branch and will be based in Melbourne. In his roles, the sections that Dr Tinker will oversee are Modelling, Assessment and Emergency Preparedness, Radiation Research and Advice, Monitoring & Emergency Response, Radiation Protection Services According to google scholar he has contributed to 65 academic articles including several World Health Organisation Publications.

Two public servants have been promoted at the Department of Industry, Science, Energy, and Resources. These are Christopher Videroni in Canberra and Timothy Stobaus in New South Wales.

At Services Australia there have been three promotions to general manager for Thomas McGoram, Belinda Robertson, and Anthony Piazza, all based in Canberra.

Electrical systems company Thales Australia has appointed Jeff Connolly as their new chief executive director. He will start on September 1 and replaces current chief executive Chris Jenkins who retires after 14 years in the role. Mr Connolly is currently executive chairman and chief executive of Siemens Australia, where he has been for the last 30 years.

Mr Connolly also established and chaired the Prime Minister’s Industry 4.0 Taskforce in 2016 which has become the AiGroup Industry 4.0 Forum, run by industry employer organisation AiGroup. He remains on the executive council. He also chaired the federal government Research Commercialisation Taskforce. The recommendations of that taskforce led to the $2.2 billion University Research Commercialisation Action Plan launched earlier this year.

Thales Australia and New Zealand Chair Belinda Hutchinson said the company would greatly benefit from the experience of Mr Connolly.

“As an experienced, passionate and committed supporter of Australian research, innovation and modern manufacturing, Jeff has the strategic and operational capability to deliver for our customers and support our employees and other stakeholders,” Ms Hutchinson said.

The Western Australian government has appointed two new commissioners to its Western Australian Industrial Relations Commission. Charmaine Tsang will begin on July 18 while Timothy Kucera will begin on August 29.

Ms Tsang moves from her partner role at the Perth Employment and Safety team at international industry law firm HFW. She brings the Western Australian Industrial Relations Commission 17 years of experience relating to employment, industrial relations, and work and safety matters. Mr Kucera moves from his role as state secretary of the United Professional Firefighters Union of WA. He has more than 30 years of experience as an employment law specialist and as industrial officer for various unions.

Western Australian Industrial Relations Minister Bill Johnston said that both of the new appointees will be valuable additions to the commission.

Sydney-based hospitality tech scaleup me&u has appointed its chief financial officer and two executive leaders for its United States operations. Natalie Housson is the group’s new chief financial officer who moves from the chief financial officer role at Sydney-based financing platform Moneytech. She previously held financial roles at eBay and Paypal. Brian Duncan will be the vice-president of sales in the United States while Eric Seymour will be head of business development in the United States.

Victoria-based microscopic imaging company OptiScan has appointed a new Sean Gardiner as a non-executive director. Mr Gardiner is currently the director and head of investment at Singapore-based private equity firm Clermont Group. Before that, he spent 20 years across multiple Morgan Stanley offices.
