Deloitte acquires sovereign cloud company Sliced Tech

On the day that sovereign cloud service company Sliced Tech was awarded ‘Certified Strategic’ status under the federal government’s controversial Hosting Certification Framework, the company was acquired by multinational consulting giant Deloitte.

Instead of three Australian cloud providers – Sliced Tech, Vault Cloud and AUCloud – joining the global giant Amazon Web Services in the first tranche of companies certified under the new sovereign data and security framework, there were just two.

The Hosting Certification Framework is managed by the Digital Transformation Agency.

Founded in Canberra in 2011 by chief executive Jason McClure, Sliced Tech delivers cloud managed services. The company’s 40-odd employees are based primarily in Canberra but has a presence in Sydney and Brisbane as well.

Neither Deloitte nor Sliced Tech revealed the sale price attached to the acquisition.

The federal government has been a fast-growing market for Deloitte’s digital services. The company has had a voracious appetite for new business. Among a series of high-profile engagements across government is its work on the redevelopment of the myGov portal for which it has been paid $30 million over the past two year.

The acquisition of Sliced Tech is the second primarily Canberra-based digital specialist that Deloitte has acquired this year, having bought Soda Strategic and its 30 employees last April.

Sliced Tech provides secure, enterprise grade cloud managed services, primarily to regulated public sector clients operating in highly secure and classified environments.

“Operating cloud services for public sector clients involves high levels of compliance in security and data privacy, and this is where the Sliced Tech team has built a strong market presence,” Deloitte Canberra managing partner Phil Roberts said.

“With foundation capability when it comes to ISM Protected level cloud and application services, the Sliced Tech team will be another differentiator for Deloitte in the Canberra market,” he said

“Their active and secondary internet gateways have been certified for use by the federal government, and their services include all data held onshore in Australian data centres.”

Terms of the transaction are confidential, Deloitte said.
