A $71 million satellite manufacturing hub planned for the outskirts of Canberra has been canned by a consortium of aerospace and defence firms in the wake of the Albanese government’s decision to axe Australia’s first national space mission.
Electro Optic Systems, who has been leading the project with Nova Systems, and which also counts Gilmour Space as a major partner, has confirmed that work on the Australian Satellite Manufacturing Hub had ceased.
The hub was to be used to design, manufacture and test satellites up to 500kg in two facilities, including at the South Jerrabomberra Innovation Precinct outside Canberra, resulting in around 60 direct jobs.
