The state government-backed merger of Adelaide’s two biggest universities will be sweetened with a new $200 million research fund. But the plan still faces doubts from staff and hurdles and scrutiny in the Parliament.
Over the weekend the University of Adelaide, University of South Australia and the Malinauskas government formally agreed to the long vaunted merger to create the Adelaide University.
The merger – among the biggest in the world – will create the largest cohort of domestic students of any university in Australia when it opens in 2026, according to the state government, which is also forecasting an additional $500 million per year to the South Australian economy by 2034 from the merger.
